Georgia minimum car insurance explained: what 25/50/25 really covers
By Guilherme MontmorMulti-unit Velox Insurance franchisee in Metro Atlanta, serving the Brazilian community for over 12 years.
Short answer: Georgia requires every registered vehicle to carry liability insurance of at least $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage, usually written as 25/50/25. That minimum pays for the damage you cause to other people. It does not pay to repair your own car.
What 25/50/25 means
| Coverage | Georgia minimum |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 |
| Property damage, per accident | $25,000 |
- Bodily injury helps pay medical bills and related costs for people you injure in an accident you cause.
- Property damage helps pay for the other driver's car, or things like a fence or mailbox you hit.
What the minimum does not cover
- Your own car. Collision coverage helps repair your vehicle after a crash. Comprehensive helps with things like theft, hail, flooding or hitting a deer.
- Your own medical bills. Optional coverages such as medical payments can help here.
- Costs above your limits. If an accident costs more than your policy limit, the difference can become your responsibility.
Is the minimum enough?
For some drivers with an older, paid-off car, the minimum can be a reasonable starting point. But medical and repair costs add up fast, and many people choose higher limits to protect their savings and income. The right answer depends on your car, your budget and what you own. An agent can show you the price difference between limits so you can decide with real numbers.
How to compare options
1. Gather your driver's license, the car's VIN and your Georgia address. 2. Ask for the same coverage limits and deductibles from each company so the prices are comparable. 3. Ask which discounts apply, for example bundling auto with renters or home insurance.
As an independent agency, Velox compares options from multiple insurance companies for you. We cannot promise a specific price or approval, since each company makes its own decision, but we will show you the choices side by side.
